Prescribing “over the counter” medicines, including Paracetamol costs the NHS approximately £136 million each year.
Paracetamol is readily available to buy from Pharmacies, supermarkets, local stores etc. The cost to buy from a local store is 19p, whereas the cost to the NHS is over £33 (including dispensing fees, administration and Clinician costs).
In line with Local and National NHS Guidance we will no longer routinely be issuing prescriptions for short term or intermittent use of Paracetamol and all affected patients will be informed by letter.
By reducing spending on items such as this, resources can be used on high priority areas in the NHS.
Thank you for your assistance.
