The Future

We have invested in modern equipment and built a team of professional staff to provide comprehensive and modern treatment, whilst trying to preserve the best of traditional family medicine. We hope this website will give you all the information you require about the facilities available from our practice. If there is anything else you wish to know, please feel free to ask our staff at any time.

The Past

Our present premises at 1 Castle Meadows were purpose-built in 1997. The practice was originally founded by Dr Charles Harris in Scotch Street, but his son transferred the surgery to 1 Lowther Street in 1934.

Surgery Opening Times

Monday to Friday - 8.00am - 6.30pm
Saturday - Closed
Sunday - Closed


The practice is closed one afternoon per month for training purposes, with emergency cover provided by CHOC (Cumbria Health On Call)

We offer some later appointments each week for those who work. Please ask reception for details of the next session if this applies to you..

Reception staff are available to answer the telephone from 8.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday.

Later appointments may be available on request.

Out of Hours Emergencies

A doctor is available for serious illness 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Emergency cover is provided by doctors from this practice from 8.00am to 6.30pm from Monday to Friday.

From 6.30pm until 8.00am the next morning, and at weekends, emergency cover is provided by, CHOC (Cumbria Health On Call, a co-operative formed by most GPs in West Cumbria. The telephone number is provided on calling your usual surgery number, or you can dial direct between those times: 01228 401999. When appropriate, you may well be asked to attend the Treatment Centre located at the West Cumberland Hospital for a more efficient assessment and treatment.

Access for the Disabled

There is easy access for wheelchair patients. A lift to the first floor is provided. There are toilets suitable for disabled persons on each floor. Guide dogs are welcome.

Access and Parking

The entrance is from Castle Meadows. The small car park is for disabled badge holders and staff only. There are ample public and commercial car parking facilities around the Medical Centre.

Practice News and Notices

CHANGES TO PERSONNEL:

  • Dr Pratima Misra is leaving us at the end of December, and we wish her well.
  • Dr Gemma Kirby joined us again over the summer, having worked with us a number of years ago, and we are pleased to welcome her back.

TRAINING DAYS:

The surgery will be closed for training between the hours of 1.00pm and 4.30pm on the following dates:-

2012: Tue 17 Jan / Wed 15 Feb / Thu 15 Mar / Tue 15 May / Wed 13 Jun / Thu 12 Jul / Tue 18 Sep / Wed 17 Oct / Thu 15 Nov

2013: Tue 15 Jan / Wed 13 Feb / Thu 14 Mar

If you require a doctor between these times, your call will be diverted to the Out of Hours service (CHOC - Cumbria Health On Call) for triage.

OPENING HOURS:

The surgery is generally open between the hours of 8.00 am and 6.30pm.

For people who work and are unable to come during the normal hours, we are now offering a limited number of appointments before 8am. Please ring reception on 01946 692 241 for information about available appointments.

REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS:

Please use one of the following methods to request your repeat prescription:

  1. Ring our 24 hr automated prescription line - 01946 518 299 - and leave a message
  2. Send a text message to 07624 809 155
  3. Tick the required items on your repeat prescription sheet and hand in at reception.
  4. Use the automated prescription form link on this website.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU NEED TO WAIT 48 HOURS BEFORE COLLECTING YOUR MEDICATION AS THE PRESCRIPTION LINE IS NOT MANNED ALL THE TIME. ANY URGENT REQUESTS SHOULD BE MADE IN PERSON TO RECEPTION.
